How do you sterilize sterling silver jewelry safely?

May 3rd, 2008 · 6 Comments

I recently bought a used antique silver whistle. It's about 100 years old and was used by the previous owner(s). I want to put this whistle in my mouth and use it at times. I know that silver by nature is anti-microbal, but I don't want to rely on that when I'm considering that this is something going in my mouth.

Also, I do not want to pay to use some expensive autoclave machine that is intended for body jewelry or anything like that. And, I want to keep the sheen of my silver and don't want it to be damaged from the cleaning and sterilization process.

      1.Boiling water or in the
      2.oven for at least 2 hours at 160 °C (320 °F). Also
3.hydrogen peroxide as a chemical sterilizing agent is relatively non-toxic once diluted to low concentrations (although a dangerous oxidizer at high concentrations), and leaves no residue.
      4.Bleach and
      5.Lysol disinfectant spray.

There are two types of sterilization: physical and chemical.

      Physical sterilization includes:
      > Heat sterilization
      > Radiation sterilization

      Chemical sterilization includes:
      > Ethylene oxide
      > Ozone
      > Chlorine bleach
      > Glutaraldehyde
      > Formaldehyde
      > Hydrogen peroxide
      > Peracetic acidv
      > Prions
