I don't buy any jewelry unless it is sterling silver. It lasts longer and I think it looks better than anything you can buy.

Some pieces can be very beautiful depending on design and silver purity. Make sure there is an adequate return policy before you order. I have found that if I order online from italy I usually receive the most beautiful pieces. Some can be quite costly but it all depends on what one can afford and the designer.

Silver is one of the precious metals and sterling silver is the standard silver alloy used for jewelry making (see http://sarit-jewelry.com/Info.html ).
Some of the most beautiful jewelry designs are made in sterling silver. The "cheap" look and feel therefore depends on the design rather than on precious metal used.
    Good luck!

Sterling silver is not a cheap looking or cheap feeling material. I love sterling silver and my favorite is http://www.b2cjewels.com/productdetails.aspx?itemid=1708&from=br . So i think you should go ahead with your idea of gifting it.
