This morning I discovered my mother's jewelry box has been stolen from my bedroom…at first I thought my son took it and then lied to me, so I tore his room apart. Finally I called the police and because it is burglary the Sheriff came and took the report. I told him that while I was waiting I spoke with my brother and he suggested I look around some pawn shops in the area. I offered the Sheriff my sketches I had been drawing since this morning, and also offered a list of the items I am fully knowing were in there. He declined both. What do I do now? Are pawn shops obligated to turn over items that are in a suspected case of burglary? Who do they turn them over to? If I discover something in a pawn shop do I tell the shop keeper or call the police? Anyone have any thoughts on where I go from here? Tomorrow is Monday and I plan on being on the search for most of the day…near as I can tell it has been gone for about 3-4 days.

I have several antique pins and brooches. The obvious ones are marked 925 but there are many that are not marked. None of them stick to magnets and all are heavy for their size. And, as far as I can see, none of the metal has been chipped away to expose a possible secondary metal underneath.

I do have one piece, however, that seems to be tarnished in a small area, but will not come off with my polishing cloth. It doesn't stick to a magnet either. How can I tell if they are the real thing?

Also, will testing it damage the jewelry - especially if it's not real silver? If they're not silver, what metal could they possibly have used that won't stick to a magnet?

I recently bought a used antique silver whistle. It's about 100 years old and was used by the previous owner(s). I want to put this whistle in my mouth and use it at times. I know that silver by nature is anti-microbal, but I don't want to rely on that when I'm considering that this is something going in my mouth.

Also, I do not want to pay to use some expensive autoclave machine that is intended for body jewelry or anything like that. And, I want to keep the sheen of my silver and don't want it to be damaged from the cleaning and sterilization process.

Is there a certain type of business that will buy uncut/rough gems? or if I were to take them somewhere to get them cut is there somewhere that buys loose cut stones?

My husband and I went mining recently and I found an emerald that I'd guess weighs about 1 1/2 pounds. I also found a ruby that is about 2 1/2 to 3 inchs long. I'm very interested in finding out if they're worth anything.
